Evaluating MuCell

Customers who are interested in using the MuCell Microcellular Foaming Process for extrusion often begin their evaluation with a relatively small scale feasibility trial in order to project some of  the key characteristics of the material and product that they are interested in producing.

These feasibility trials can be carried out on Trexel’s specially designed pilot 2.5 inch line in Woburn, MA where a tube, rod, or small sheet can be produced with MuCell dies for testing and evaluation using the customer’s preferred materials.

Based on the results of these tests, the customer may decide to perform additional trials using a die design which more closely approximates his end product (for small products) or will typically decide whether to install a pilot line in his own company for additional development work or whether to modify one of his existing production extruders to develop commercial scale foamed product.

Occasionally, Trexel may be able to gain access to licensee line for further commercial scale testing, but most licensees have adopted the process for proprietary use, making such lines difficult to access in most cases.

For Asian customers, Trexel recommends that they contact JSW, the Japan Steel Works, which has a significant extrusion development laboratory for the MuCell Process in Japan.
