Krauss Maffei Licenses Trexel's MuCell™ Microcellular Process Technology

Leading Supplier of Injection Molding Equipment to Build Injection Machines with Trexel's MuCell™ Microcellular Process Technology

June 21, 2000 - Woburn, MA - Trexel, Inc. and Krauss Maffei Kunststofftechnik announced today that they have entered into a licensing agreement for Krauss Maffei to supply injection molding equipment utilizing Trexel's proprietary MuCell™ Microcellular Process Technology. Krauss Maffei Kunststofftechnik is a global supplier of injection molding systems to the plastics industry and belongs to the Mannesmann Plastics Machinery Group, the world's largest supplier of injection molding machines. Trexel is the worldwide leader in the development and commercialization of the MuCell Microcellular Process Technology.

Under the agreement, Krauss Maffei is licensed to sell new MuCell-capable injection molding equipment, or retrofit the MuCell process to existing Krauss Maffei equipment. Injection molders can purchase equipment directly from Krauss Maffei while taking an end-user license for the MuCell process from Trexel. Trexel will supply technical know-how and support on the MuCell process to any Krauss Maffei customer.

David Bernstein, President and C.E.O. of Trexel stated, "Krauss Maffei is not only a major technology leader in the injection molding equipment market, but they have spent several years studying microcellular foaming. They have a strong technical team ready to implement the MuCell process quickly for their customers."

David Pierick, Trexel's Vice President Injection Molding stated, "Combining Krauss Maffei's advanced technical solutions with the MuCell Microcellular Process Technology will benefit the industry greatly by providing cost savings and processing benefits that would otherwise be unachievable."

Guido Radig, Krauss Maffei's Marketing Manager stated, "Using the MuCell technology will bring many advantages for a wide range of products and, of course, for the customers. We think that structural foam parts will get more and more important in future and the great response from our customers lately underlines this."

Equipment

Krauss Maffei will be implementing the technology at their development center in Allach and expects to have equipment operating before December.

About Trexel

Trexel is the exclusive developer of the MuCell microcellular process technology by virtue of its extensive portfolio of patents in the United States, Canada, Europe, and several Asian countries. While Trexel's primary business is licensing the MuCell technology to injection molders, extruders, blow molders, and equipment manufacturers, Trexel also provides world-class engineering support, training and other services to licensees, and supplies them with equipment and components integral to the MuCell process. In support of these activities, Trexel operates a commercial-scale research laboratory in its Woburn, MA facility.

About MuCell

The MuCell process is suitable for a wide range of injection molded, extruded, and blow molded products as it allows licensees to reduce product costs while enhancing design and processing. MuCell parts, which have a solid-like appearance, contain less material than parts produced through less-current methods, as millions of tiny air pockets take the place of materials while allowing the part to maintain most of its former properties. In addition, the process can eliminate stress, warpage, and sink marks, and greatly improve cycle time. These benefits allow designers to specify lightweight, polymer-saving foam materials for products in which conventionally foamed materials would be unacceptable.

About Krauss Maffei:

Krauss Maffei Kunststofftechnik with its headquarter in Munich, Germany, offers machines with a clamping force range from 300 to 64,000 kN for thermoplastic, thermoset and elastomer processing. This includes machines for special processes like multi-component, high speed, vertical injection, clean room and low pressure application and for CD and PET bottle preform production lines. The equipment is used to manufacture a wide range of products in the automotive, packaging and technical industries. A very strong point of Krauss Maffei are the customized solutions for all kinds of applications from injection molding machines as subsystems to turnkey flexible manufacturing systems.
